About the Northwestern Political Union
I am very pleased that a group of engaged Northwestern University students is forming the Political Union. This Union will further debate and engagement among our students and with public intellectuals within and beyond Northwestern on critical policy issues. This is an important effort which I fully support. -Dr. Henry S. Bienen, former President, Northwestern University
The Northwestern Political Union is a community of students with varying political viewpoints, united by their common interest in discussion of political and global affairs. Weekly meetings are student-run and center around various student-chosen debate topics. The Political Union also occasionally sponsors guest speakers and faculty panels, providing an intimate forum for engagement with leading public intellectuals and political figures.
Most importantly, we believe in the power of active student contributions to the Political Union as we seek to put student voices in dialogue with one another and with public leaders. Founded in Spring of 2008, we are pleased to see that the organization has grown quickly as students have found both intellectual fulfillment and camaraderie with friends through the society. We look forward to your involvement in the Political Union as we seek to tackle these leading questions in public affairs as a Northwestern community.
About Bughouse Square
Bughouse Square takes its name from an old nickname for Chicago’s Washington Square Park, where Chicagoans gathered in the early 20th century to hear sidewalk poets and soapbox orators proclaim their views on political issues of the day, much in the same fashion as the famous Speaker’s Corner in London’s Hyde Park.
Just as with the original Bughouse Square, the Political Union and this publication aim to provide an open, public forum for expression of political views by members of our community. We welcome submissions of articles featuring commentary, campus news, and analysis (preferably, but not necessarily, relating to a political union event) from all Northwestern students. To submit, simply email us at: politicalunion [@] u [.] northwestern [.] edu.
